Pay it forward

Driving into Fredericksburg, I understood why people flock here. The main street looks like a postcard come to life, with charming shops, high-end consignment boutiques, and restaurants beckoning at every turn. The architecture is a nod to its German heritage—historic, elegant, and somehow timeless. It didn’t take long for me to declare, “We’re coming back!” But next time, we’ll bring the Fab Five (you know who you are) because this town deserves a full squad to properly enjoy its offerings.

Beyond its picturesque downtown, Fredericksburg is smack in the middle of Texas Hill Country, which also happens to be Texas Wine Country. And I’m not talking a handful of wineries—there are over 100 in this region! Fredericksburg itself boasts more than 60 tasting rooms, vineyards, and wineries, with even more just a short drive away. Naturally, we had to get a taste of the action (pun intended).

We stayed at Messina Hof Vineyard and Winery, a Harvest Host location that knows how to roll out the welcome mat. They set us up with a prime parking spot overlooking the vineyard and the tasting room—a view so good it almost made me forget about the chihuahuas grumbling underfoot.

The wine tasting was spectacular, and the charcuterie board? Next level. John the Rockstar Husband Laverty, known for his DIY charcuterie wizardry, was actually taking notes. If you’ve seen him in action, you know this is high praise. The highlight of the tasting? The staff listening intently to John’s rant about how wine is “just heartburn waiting to happen”—and then nailing it on the first try with a wine he actually liked. A true miracle worker.

If that wasn’t enough, we discovered that Luckenbach, TX, was a mere ten minutes away. Luckenbach has been on both our bucket lists for ages, so the next day, we jumped in the RV and headed straight there.

This tiny town, population three, is a slice of country music history, made famous by Waylon Jenning’s “Luckenbach, Texas.” The entire “town” is basically a bar, a dance hall, and a general store, all oozing with rustic charm and music legends’ footprints. We grabbed a drink, soaked in the ambiance, and snagged matching T-shirts because no trip is complete without souvenirs. Standing there, sipping a cold one under the Texas sun, it was easy to imagine the music, the stories, and the history of this tiny yet larger-than-life place.

Luckenbach didn’t disappoint, but as we climbed back into the RV, the road called us onward. Next stop: Gruene and New Braunfels, where we’re hoping for even more Hill Country magic.

Fredericksburg, you’ve officially earned a spot on the must-return list. Until next time, paws and breathe!
