Route 66: Nostalgia, New Finds, and a Chihuahua with Attitude

  • The chis got a yard thanks to the new dog fence and loved every second of it

Breathe

  • It was a lovely spot to learn about the history of old Route 66, but seeing the bypassed towns full of closed-up shops and relics was very sad.

Pay it forward

Driving Route 66 isn’t just a trip; it’s a time warp. Though the road was officially decommissioned in 1985, its twists, turns, and switchbacks continue to lure travelers in search of nostalgia. However, navigating its remnants can feel like solving a treasure map with chunks missing. We wove through interstates and detours, crossing everything from the Continental Divide at 7,200 feet to Albuquerque at a low 5,800 feet. The journey was an adventure in itself, blending modern highways with echoes of a bygone era.

A Slice of History at Enchanted RV and Trading Post

Our stop for the night was a true Route 66 gem: the Enchanted RV and Trading Post. This place didn’t just nod to the iconic highway—it threw a full-blown tribute. The property features a charming exhibit of vintage campers from the 1950s to the 1970s, each beautifully restored and available as Airbnb rentals. From their colourful exteriors to retro interiors, these campers were like stepping into a “Leave It to Beaver” episode.

The Trading Post didn’t stop there. The laundry room featured a vintage ringer washer—thankfully just for decoration (though I half-expected someone to suggest we try it out). Memorabilia was scattered everywhere, from gas station signs to antique Route 66 road markers. It was like walking through a museum curated by someone with an unmatched love for the Mother Road.

The Dogs’ Delight (and Drama)

For once, the chihuahuas were thrilled with our accommodations. The park allowed us to set up a dog fence, transforming a little slice of the grounds into their private yard. Auggie, Finnegan, and Casey basked in the sunshine, romping around like they’d just discovered RV heaven.

Of course, Casey’s good mood couldn’t last. As I went to harness him for departure the next morning, he decided to channel his inner velociraptor and bit me—hard enough to draw blood. It was a special kind of betrayal that only a beloved yet feisty Chihuahua can pull off, leaving me cringing in pain and in a very sour mood.

Retail Therapy Saves the Day

Luckily, salvation was a short walk away at the Campers World next door. A store full of RV gadgets and accessories? Say no more. We picked up a few upgrades to improve life on the road (and my mood, if only slightly). There’s something about shopping for nifty little RV hacks that soothes the soul—kind of like a travel balm for weary adventurers.

Final Thoughts on Route 66

Route 66 may be a shadow of its former self, but places like the Enchanted RV and Trading Post keep its spirit alive. From the nostalgic ambiance to the unexpected joys (and mishaps), it was a stop worth making. Just don’t ask Casey for his opinion—he’s grounded for at least a week.
