Saddleback Mountain RV Park in Balmorhea, Texas, was meant to be one of those short, uneventful stays that we’d barely remember. At $20 a night for full hookups, we weren’t expecting much—and honestly, we might have underestimated it.

The park itself had a relaxed vibe, nestled next to a well-stocked convenience store and gas station, which made grabbing essentials easy. On-site, there was also a steakhouse and bar that piqued our curiosity. We talked about checking it out, but neither of us mustered the courage to go inside—chalk it up to post-flu recovery or just not wanting to risk an awkward scene with gun-toting Trump supporters.

Our spot was quiet and peaceful, especially after carefully choosing one far, far away from the full-timer with six dogs of various sizes. (The chihuahuas send their thanks for that decision.) The park also featured a charming cactus garden that made our evening walks more picturesque than we’d expected.

Since it was my turn to cook dinner, and John the Rockstar husband Laverty was busy working, I made a less-than-stellar decision: gas station pizza. Spoiler alert—it was exactly as bad as it sounds. Pro tip: when there’s a steakhouse on-site, maybe just go in and give it a try. That said, as we made for our departure we tempted a togo lunch from the same gas station and have to say their burgers were outstanding. The difference was night and day. See pizza was last night and the burgers were in the day time. I can’t keep spelling the out for you.

All in all, Saddleback Mountain RV Park turned out to have more character than we’d anticipated. Though we didn’t get to meet the locals or brave the steakhouse, the atmosphere, peaceful setting, and those unexpected touches made us wish we’d had a little more time to soak it all in. Onward to the next adventure!
