Paws
- We got plenty of walks and the dogs are settling into the new normal
Breathe
- The scenery is spectacular and makes driving so much more exciting (well that and the hills/wind/wild animals)
- We managed to restock our pantry after the border bandits took our fresh stuff
- Literally the best latte
Pay it forward
- We highly recommend Big Sky Deli for all of your travel needs. They have a great playground, and picnic area along with all the fresh food you need.
Our stay in Vaughn, Montana, at the Big Sky Deli was one of those Harvest Hosts sweet spots we didn’t see coming. We rolled in thinking we’d be lone RV wolves for the night, but little did we know, this place was about to deliver all the goods—and I mean all the goods.
First off, there’s a farmers market. And since our veggies and eggs were cruelly ripped from us at the border (RIP to those), we practically sprinted over to stock up. Armed with fresh fruit and veggies, we stashed our loot back in the Raven like it was the last grocery haul before a zombie apocalypse.
Then came the main event: the Big Sky Deli. This place is like a small grocery store on steroids—except all the steroids are locally made jams, fresh pasta, and ready-made meals. I’m 99% sure I spent at least 20 minutes just wandering around, doing that thing where you pick up random jars of stuff you’ll probably never use but suddenly need in your life. I was living my best small-town grocery fantasy. And then, to top it off, we grabbed lattes and some fresh grilled cheese. I’m not saying the grilled cheese changed my life, but I might put it in my memoir someday.
Now, Vaughn is charming, but… not exactly packed with attractions. John the Rockstar husband Laverty, undeterred, took the dogs for another tour while I jumped on client calls. And when I say “tour,” I mean he found alpacas in a backyard. Just casually hanging out, as alpacas do, like “Hey, welcome to Vaughn!”
As night fell, we thought we’d have the place to ourselves, but then bam, in roll two Airstreams. Naturally, we had to bond over the universal RV topic: the weather. Specifically, the terrifying wind warning that popped up on our weather app like a horror movie plot twist. The Airstreamers were chill, basically saying, “It’s just a breeze!” Meanwhile, we were over here strategizing how to avoid becoming a kite. After a quick conference, we decided the smart move was to leave at the crack of dawn, skipping Lewiston and beating the wind like seasoned road warriors.
Sometimes the RV life is all about dodging disaster… and alpacas. But we wouldn’t have it any other way!
